Almost Heaven (2017) film screening

Medical Anthropology Film and Discussion Group

Tuesday 9 March 2021   15:30 to 17:00

Location:

Virtual Event

The GTC Medical Anthropology Film and Discussion Group explores the extent to which film can complement, enrich and further the study of medical anthropology themes, topics and methods. After watching selected clips, we discuss a film’s content and approach, and interrogate its capacity to support the analysis of issues relating to illness, crisis, health and wellbeing.

This term’s focus is the theme of ‘death and dying’.

In this meeting, the group will discuss Carol Salter’s 2017 film. Seventeen-year-old Ying Lang is away from home and training to become a mortician at one of China’s largest funeral homes. Despite her fear of ghosts and dead bodies, she learns the rituals of cleaning and massaging the corpses as the grieving families look on. The everyday routine serves up both humorous and life affirimg moments.

The screening will last 40 minutes followed by discussion. This film can be viewed online by participants up to one day after the event.

Please contact paola.esposito@anthro.ox.ac.uk and nick.bunnin@chinese.ox.ac.uk for further information or if you require help accessing the event.
