Land of Silence and Darkness (1971) film screening

Medical Anthropology Film and Discussion Group

Tuesday 4 May 2021   15:30 to 17:00

Location:

Virtual Event

The GTC Medical Anthropology Film and Discussion Group explores the extent to which film can complement, enrich and further the study of medical anthropology themes, topics and methods. After watching selected clips, we discuss a film’s content and approach, and interrogate its capacity to support the analysis of issues relating to illness, crisis, health and wellbeing.

The theme for Trinity is 'impairment'.

In this meeting, the group will discuss Land of Silence and Darkness (1971, directed by Werner Herzog). This documentary follows 56-year-old Fini Straubinger, a German woman who became deaf-blind in her late teens. After 30 years of being confined to her bed by her mother, she fought to overcome her isolation by helping others similarly afflicted.

After a brief introduction to the film, a link will be provided to all participants to watch film segment/s online (up to 40 mins). After the viewing, we will regroup for discussion and/or Q&A.

Conveners: Paola Esposito; Serena Alagappan.

Please contact paola.esposito@anthro.ox.ac.uk for further information or if you require help accessing the event.
