Building futures: college and supporters paving the way to success

For Deyaanjali (Deya) Deb (Clinical Medicine, 2024), a summer internship at Oxford PharmaGenesis became a gateway to game-changing learnings. Over four weeks, Deya explored the world of HealthScience communications and gained invaluable skills that will shape her future career beyond university.
Deya’s role included writing pharmaceutical news digests and managing her own project, experiences that enhanced her communication, adaptability, and teamwork skills. ‘Working with the editors and writers allowed me to hone my writing skills, which I hope to draw on in the future,’ she shared.
More importantly, the internship broadened her understanding of interconnected healthcare systems. ‘This experience has had a big influence on my future plans. I now better understand the industries that contribute to patient care beyond the healthcare system itself,’ Deya explained.
Green Templeton creating opportunities
This impactful internship was made possible through the college’s commitment to fostering interdisciplinary opportunities for its students. Governing Body Fellow Dr Sheila Lumley, actively promotes such internships, recognising their value.
‘Opportunities like these are incredibly valuable,’ Sheila remarked. ‘They enable students to explore different career paths and establish professional connections early on.’
Deya emphasised the importance of the college’s role in supporting students’ personal and professional growth. ‘Green Templeton provides a supportive environment for students to build their portfolios and explore interests beyond their degree,’ she said. ‘I would encourage fellow students to apply for opportunities like this because they can open doors to incredible career paths that aren’t always visible in mainstream healthcare.’
Oxford PharmaGenesis: alumni and supporters
The partnership between Green Templeton and Oxford PharmaGenesis highlights how alumni and supporters can profoundly impact students’ journeys. Oxford PharmaGenesis, a global HealthScience consultancy, has deep connections with the college. CEO Chris Winchester, Chief Operating Officer Dr Richard White and Executive Director Paul Farrow are all Associate Fellows. They all really understand the ripple effect of supporting the life of college and students.
Paul, an alumnus of Green College (2005), credits his time at Oxford for shaping his career. ‘Looking back, I realise how fortunate I was to find myself at Green College,’ he shared. ‘The DPhil experience, support from college tutors, and the incredible research team I worked with prepared me for a successful career in a profession I’d never even heard of. It’s a privilege to now support the college and help students explore science careers outside academia.’
Oxford PharmaGenesis has demonstrated its dedication to Green Templeton students including by funding a DPhil studentship in Translational Health Sciences and offering internships to clinical medicine students. These initiatives exemplify how alumni and corporate partners can bridge the gap between academia and industry.
The ripple effect of support: empowering the next generation
Deya’s story is a testament to the transformative power of alumni and supporter contributions empowering the next generation. Through their active participation in college and their generosity, opportunities like the Oxford PharmaGenesis internship empower students to explore new career pathways, develop essential skills, and gain insights that extend far beyond their academic studies.
By supporting Green Templeton, alumni and partners are building futures, creating a ripple effect that shapes careers, communities, and industries. As Deya put it, ‘This experience has been invaluable for my career and personal development. It’s an opportunity I hope many other students will have the chance to pursue.’
