Dr Clark Brundin (1931–2021)

It is with sadness that the college learned of the death of Honorary Fellow Dr Clark Brundin. He led then-Templeton College as President/Head of House from 1992 to 1996.

Clark was born in Los Angeles and educated at the California Institute of Technology and the University of California, Berkeley. After receiving his PhD and a brief period in the US Navy, he started a research career in engineering that brought him to Oxford as a fellow and tutor at Jesus College.

At Oxford he took responsibility for a new honours degree in Engineering, Economics and Management and progressed in university academic administration to a senior role working with the Vice-Chancellor. This experience and his reputation for interpersonal skills and diplomacy led to his appointment as Vice-Chancellor of the University of Warwick in 1985.

In 1992 Clark returned to Oxford to take on two roles: President of Templeton College and founding director of the School of Management Studies, which developed into the current Saïd Business School. His leadership was marked by a period of dividing overlapping interests between the college and the embryonic business school. Clark was instrumental in establishing Templeton as a fully independent college, including gaining its Royal Charter in 1995.

Clark was an Honorary Fellow of Green Templeton College until his death at the age of 90 on 3 May 2021.

Our thoughts are with Clark’s family and friends at this time. Please let Gillian Cane know if you would like to pass messages or tributes to his family.
