The Wellcome Trust has established the Joint Initiative on Good Practice in Clinical Research with the Gates Foundation and the African Academy of Sciences to develop new clinical research guidelines.
Professor Landray said: “I am delighted to have the opportunity to lead this exciting initiative to develop and promote a new approach to clinical trial regulation.”
He added: “Clinical trials are the bedrock of safe and effective treatment, but over recent years have become unduly expensive and burdensome to conduct, threatening the ability to develop new treatments. New guidelines must be forward-looking and foster innovation, whilst remaining true to the underpinning scientific and ethical principles.”
“This is an exciting time for clinical trials – widespread adoption of electronic healthcare records and advances in digital technologies provide unprecedented opportunities to transform their quality and efficiency. It is essential that guidelines embrace these new approaches whilst maintaining focus on the key quality issues that materially impact the wellbeing of trial participants and the reliability of the results, which influence the care of future patients.”
The new guidelines will be co-developed in an Open Regulatory Science approach with people from across the clinical trial enterprise, including regulators, funders, academic and commercial trialists, clinicians, patients and the wider public. They will seek to be broadly applicable across disease areas, health interventions, patient populations, and geographies. Particular attention will be paid to the emerging health challenges of the coming decades including genomic medicine, drug resistant infection, communicable disease outbreaks, and the chronic degenerative disorders of middle and late-age.
Once the guidelines are established, the initiative will advocate for their adoption by policymakers, regulators, international standards bodies and those responsible for funding and conducting clinical trials worldwide.
The initiative is now hiring two other posts to join Professor Landray’s team.
Professor Landray is Professor of Medicine and Epidemiology and Deputy Director of the Big Data Institute at the Nuffield Department of Population Health. He is also Director of Health Data Research UK, Oxford.
Over the past week, we have celebrated the extraordinary Green Templeton community through events, volunteering, competitions, challenges and fundraising for student support. It has been wonderful to see alumni, fellows, supporters, friends, staff and students coming together to show our support for students.
From the Garden Party and the Photography Competition, to the Memory Wall and Biscuit Decorating Competition, the week has been filled with moments that reflect the warmth, inclusivity and spirit of our college.
Thank you to everyone who made a gift, attended an event, volunteered their time or followed along throughout the week. Together, we have raised over £65,000 for student support. These gifts will help students pursue opportunities, navigate financial pressures, participate fully in college life and thrive during their time at Oxford.

What a way to start Community & Giving Week 🤩
Saturday`s Garden Party brought together alumni, fellows, friends from across the UK and beyond to celebrate one another and support current and future students.
On the day, many shared their college memories on our `memory wall` - from today on display in the Stables Bar.
We are now asking our global community to share their memories of Green, Templeton and Green Templeton, and help us unlock an additional £1,000 for student support once we reach 50 memories.
You can email development@gtc.ox.ac.uk with a picture or share a video or audio via the link in the comments.
