Mary McMenamin to become University Assessor

Mary Mcmenamin Profile Pic In Subfusc And GownGreen Templeton’s Governing Body has elected Dr Mary McMenamin as University Assessor for the assessorial year 2027/28. Mary is a Research Fellow at Green Templeton and a Lecturer in the Department of Physiology, Anatomy and Genetics.

The Assessor is, alongside the Proctors, a senior officer and trustee of the University of Oxford with a role which encompasses advocacy and scrutiny. They oversee student matters and uphold the university’s statutes and policies throughout its governance and administration.

The Assessor’s work involves taking an active part in the business of the university and advocating on students’ behalf. It works with executive officers of Oxford Students’ Union on questions of student welfare, responds to student enquiries, and is available for consultation with students as well as other members of the university.

The role may also require undertaking any inquiry or special study of any matter concerning the policy or administration of the university at the request of Council, and attending official ceremonies including where the Assessor’s role as a senior officer of the University is an integral part of the ceremony’s substance.

Mary said of her election as Assessor,

‘The role promises to be both interesting and varied, encompassing responsibilities from participating on a range of committees and attending ceremonial events to addressing student welfare issues at both individual and broader levels.

‘I’m looking forward to gaining an inside perspective on how the University operates behind the scenes – seeing how decisions are made and how they shape the way the institution functions. I hope it will prove to be a productive and rewarding experience and that I will be able to make a meaningful and positive contribution.

‘I am grateful for support from the Principal and Governing Body of the college and my Head of Department enabling me to do this.’

Dr Mary McMenamin is a Research Fellow, Deputy Dean of Degrees and attends Governing Body as a representative for the Research Fellows at college. She chairs the Research Student presentations for the Research Fellows and organises and chairs the Research Fellow presentations for Research Students. In addition, she contributes to the organisation of other activities for the Research Fellows. Mary is a Lecturer in the Department of Physiology, Anatomy and Genetics, in Pre-Clinical Medicine and Biomedical Science with a research interest in Gene Therapy in the Brain.
