New Starter Checklist

  1. Sign and return your University card form: when you satisfy all offer conditions, you will receive a final offer letter (normally from your dept) and a Card Form to sign and return as a condition of your enrolment and a reference to the university terms and conditions. Please also read and sign the Green Templeton Student-College contract if you have not already done so.
  2. Access to IT facilities: in advance of the start of term, you will be sent your Oxford Single Sign On (SSO) IT account details. Information on the services available, your Oxford email account, and how to set up your IT access, is available on the Getting started with IT web pages. We recommend you also set up your remote access before you arrive in Oxford so that you can access University Wi-Fi services quickly on arrival.
  3. Start your university registration process: use your SSO details to access Student Self Service and then click on ‘My Student Record’ tab. Registration normally starts on or soon after 1 September. The Student Information team will send reminders.
  4. Confirm your accommodation arrangements: if you are in college accommodation, check with the Accommodation manager about non-standard moving in dates if you need to arrive earlier than the standard contract start date. If you are still looking for accommodation, the university’s Collegiate Accommodation Support Service may be able to help.
  5. Organise your finances: complete all relevant paperwork if you are taking out a loan so your funds are available to you for soon after you and the college complete registration. Note that UK student loans can take up to a week to go into your account even after you have fully completed registration. Alternatively ensure that your sponsor is ready to transfer agreed funds. Fees are due for payment by 30 September, and you will normally be invoiced in August. When budgeting you should be aware that your first few weeks of term are likely to be more expensive as you prepare and settle into life at the university. There is also useful information on managing your finances and if you are from outside the UK, see the bank information on the International students page.
  6. Medical treatment: register with our college GP in advance of arrival if possible. Students who require a visa (those from outside the UK or Ireland, or do not have indefinite leave to remain or pre-settled or settled status) will need to pay the immigration health charge when they apply for their visa, in order to access NHS services free of charge.
  7. Vaccinations: students (aged under 25) are now recommended to have the Meningitis ACWY vaccine. This is different from the previous Meningitis C vaccine. Make an appointment with your local doctor to have this vaccine before coming to Oxford if possible. If you have had ACWY vaccine in the last five years, you do not need another dose. The Health Protection Agency recommends that young adults are protected against mumps by receiving two doses of MMR vaccine. It is strongly recommended that you are immunised before coming to Oxford. MMR can be given at the same time as the Meningitis ACWY vaccine. Information on all recommended vaccinations including COVID-19
  8. Discussing your needs in advance of starting will mean that support systems may be established before you begin your course. The Disability Advisory Service can help students diagnosed with medical, physical or learning disabilities by liaising with your college and department to organise your support needs in all areas of university life, including lectures, tutorials, examinations and college accommodation. Support for care leavers outlines help for students from a care background to ensure you have a successful university experience.
  9. Preparing to study: if you are required to do any preparation for your course before you arrive, your department will send you details. For information and advice on academic good practice, including managing your time efficiently, developing good reading and note taking skills and the importance of referencing correctly, visit academic matters.
  10. Pack your bags! make sure you have to hand at least two pieces of ID (such as your passport, driving licence or University acceptance letter), and enough money to last until you receive your student loan/ funding. International students, ensure you have your CAS letter and number as well as your passport to go through customs. Plan for using your mobile phone from home and how you will communicate once you arrive in the UK. You can get a SIM only contract or pay-as-you-go in the UK, but you must ensure your phone is ‘unlocked’ for this to work.
