Filip Nemecek

Filip NemecekI am Filip and I am a DPhil student in Sociology at Green Templeton College. I am completing my thesis in the field of international student mobility. Prior to my DPhil studies, I obtained a First from MA (Hons) Economics and Geography at the University of St Andrews. I also achieved an MSc in Migration Studies at the University of Oxford.

In my research, I take a host-country perspective on international student mobility to investigate the factors that affect international university students’ likelihood of staying in their countries of study as workers after graduation. I particularly concentrate on the impact of economic differences between international students’ countries of origin and countries of study on the stay rate, as well as the influence of international students’ socioeconomic background and university experience on their staying likelihood.

I have extensive experience with both qualitative and quantitative research methods. My current research is predominantly quantitative, utilizing means such as multiple linear regression analysis, which I undertake using Stata software. My data come from a sizeable dataset that I created by merging together data from several secondary sources, as well as own large survey that I conducted among international university students at 28 universities in the UK and Czech Republic and that yielded thousands of responses.

Outside of my DPhil work, I undertook several research assistantships and am involved in the teaching of the Statistical Methods course for Masters students at my Department. I received multiple awards, such as The Dorothy McKinney Human Geography Dissertation Fieldwork Award or the Dean’s list subscription. I regularly attend research conferences, having presented the findings of my research at Royal Geographical Society’s Annual International Conference.

Outside of my work, my passions include sports such as hiking, cycling and cross-country skiing. I also enjoy music and theatre, having performed with the St Andrews Chorus and Oxford University Gilbert and Sullivan Society. Apart from English and native Czech, I also speak French. Since coming to Oxford, I have been active in rowing and competing for the Green Templeton Boat Club, having won Blades with our team in Summer Eights 2019.
