Afternoon tea to launch legacy society
The college welcomed guests on Thursday 23 April for a truly special afternoon marking the launch of the Pirie Society. The event celebrated the new legacy society and those who are thinking about or choose to leave a gift in their will to the college.
The event began with a pleasant, guided walk through the college and its beautiful gardens, led by Head Gardener Michael Pirie. As guests strolled through the grounds, they were treated to one of the first viewings of the newly landscaped south lawns, an elegant modification that perfectly reflects the college’s commitment to nurturing both heritage and growth.

From there, the celebration flowed into the gardens, where a champagne canapé reception awaited. Laughter and conversation filled the air as attendees mingled between one another, enjoying a moment of shared appreciation for the college’s vibrant and diverse community creating inspired surroundings.

The afternoon then turned to thoughtful reflection in the Observatory Common Room, where a panel discussion featuring Senior Tutor Dr Alison Stenton and Bursar Julie Saunders explored Green Templeton’s present priorities and future aspirations. Opening the conversation, Principal Sir Michael Dixon warmly thanked Michael Pirie, highlighting the significance of honouring the college through the naming of the Pirie Society, an idea conceived by Development Director Ceri Butcher, who enlisted the support of Head of Development Maren Florenz to bring this vision to life.
In a particularly touching moment, Michael Pirie shared personal reflections on his time at the college. Offering a heartfelt glimpse into the care, dedication, and quiet stewardship that have helped shape its unique character over the years.

Guests were then invited to sit down for a traditional afternoon tea in the Observatory, bringing the event to a close in a setting that perfectly captured the spirit of the day: welcoming, reflective, and full of possibility.

The launch of the Pirie Society marks the beginning of what will become a cherished annual tradition – an opportunity to celebrate generosity, connection and the enduring impact of giving.
