Changing the narrative: What dementia can teach us about care and humanity
Monday 28 September 2026, 14:00 to 16:00, Schwarzman Centre for the Humanities
Speakers: Teun Toebes and Caroline Emmer De Albuquerque Green
The Oxford Institute for Ethics in AI and the Green Templeton College Care Initiative welcomed Teun Toebes, International Care Innovator, to talk about his ground-breaking work on reframing narratives of life with dementia. Teun drew on hopeful examples from his travels around the world together with filmmaker Jonathan de Jong, and emphasized what dementia can teach us about humanity. The lecture was introduced by Mary Daly, Professor Emerita of Sociology and Social Policy at the University of Oxford, with a snapshot of the current context of social care in the UK, and was followed by a fireside chat with Dr Caroline Green, Director of Research and Public Engagement at the Institute for Ethics in AI, on the role of AI in caring for people living with dementia.
