Research Fellows elected following competition

The college is pleased to welcome fourteen new Research Fellows elected by Governing Body following a recent competition. They join Green Templeton’s 300-strong fellowship including from across its core disciplines of management studies, medical and life sciences and social sciences.

New Research Fellows

Dr Rebecca Barnes

Rebecca Barnes Profile Picture with chin resting on armDr Rebecca Barnes is a Senior Researcher and NIHR Fellow in the Nuffield Department of Primary Care Health Sciences, University of Oxford. She is currently leading a programme of research on the management of patient risk in urgent primary care.

Rebecca’s work focuses on interaction in medicine with a view to addressing professional/practical problems, which she approaches as a conversation analyst. Her recent work has focused on help-seeking in calls to NHS 111, out-of-hours visits, antibiotic treatment decision-making and risk communication.

Dr John Buckell

John Buckell Headshot In Shirt And Dark Tie With Grey JacketDr John Buckell is a Senior Research Fellow at the Health Economics Research Centre in the Nuffield Department of Population Health, University of Oxford.

His current work is behavioural research in subject areas including obesity, tobacco, genomics, and clinical trials.

John uses experimental and econometric approaches to answer research questions.

Dr Alun Davies

Alun Davies

Dr Alun Davies specialises in engaging and involving stakeholders, communities and publics with health research. He has led several engagement programmes and initiatives across a range of countries, with expertise in Good Participatory Practice (GPP) for clinical trials and youth engagement. He currently leads a WHO technical working group on GPP for the multi-country Solidarity Trial of Covid-19 Vaccines.

A major personal achievement was establishing a large school engagement with science programme from a 3-school pilot in 2009 to a flagship element of the KEMRI-Wellcome Research Programme’s public engagement strategy, facilitating engagement between researchers and students from across 70 Kenyan schools and colleges. Dr Davies leads the Public Engagement component of the Oxford MSc in International Health and Tropical Medicine.

Dr Mark Hirons

Mark Hirons profile pic outside in blue hoodie and red jacketDr Mark Hirons is a Senior Researcher based at the Enviromental Change Institute (ECI) in the School of the Geography and the Environment, University of Oxford.

Mark is interested in addressing inter-linked social and environmental challenges through interdisciplinary research. He engages broadly with issues of well-being, inequality and justice with respect to climate change and natural resource governance. He works in a range of contexts, including the UK and Ghana, looking at issues relating to agriculture, mining and forests.

Dr Sheetal Menon

Sheetal Menon Profile PictureDr Sheetal Menon is a Postdoctoral Researcher at the Saïd Business School, University of Oxford.

Sheetal works in interdisciplinary areas of entrepreneurship and sustainability and is currently studying entrepreneurial support organisations from a ‘process-lens’ and at the organisational and ecosystem levels. She comes with a dual academic specialisation in life sciences (biotechnology) and business management.

Dr Shobhana Nagraj

Shobhana Nagraj HeadshotDr Shobhana (Shobi) Nagraj is a Clinical Researcher in the Health Systems Collaborative group, Centre for Global Health Research, Nuffield Department of Medicine, University of Oxford.

Shobi works in the field of implementation science within global surgery and global health, with a focus on maternal child health. She embeds theory into the design of innovations to promote their uptake by end-users and their future sustainability within the health system. Shobi is a course director for the Oxford University Global Surgery course and works with local organisations in Oxfordshire to reduce health inequalities and improve childhood nutrition.

Dr Chrysanthi Papoutsi

Chrysanthi Papoutsi Profile Picture in blue top wearing glassesDr Chrysanthi Papoutsi is a Research Fellow at Green Templeton College and Associate Professor at the Nuffield Department of Primary Care Health Sciences, University of Oxford. She is leading a research programme on the social study of digital health, using qualitative methods to examine how sociotechnical innovations are co-produced, implemented and used in complex health and care settings.

Chrysanthi has experience as principal investigator and co-investigator for a range of externally funded projects, including on remote monitoring in epilepsy, co-design and implementation of group consultations in the NHS, the evaluation of the NHS App as a digital front door in England, as well as qualitative participatory research on innovations for neonatal care in Kenya.

Dr James Robson

James Robson Profile Picture In Open Necked Shirt And Jumper Outside Cropped SquareDr James Robson is an Associate Professor of Tertiary Education Systems and Director of the Centre for Skills, Knowledge and Organisational Performance (SKOPE) in the Department of Education, University of Oxford. He leads the MSc in Higher Education at the department.

James’ research is focused on the political economy of Tertiary Education systems bringing together key interests in education and employment, the critical study of skills supply and demand, research and innovation ecosystems, social and epistemic justice, and sustainability.

Dr Karl Smith-Byrne

Karl Smith Byrne Headshot Cropped SquareDr Karl Smith-Byrne is a Senior Molecular Epidemiologist at the Cancer Epidemiology Unit, University of Oxford. In this role, he co-leads the metabolomics and proteomics research programme into the aetiology of prostate cancer, among others, using an integrative multi-omits approach.

Additionally, Karl conducts research into aetiology and risk prediction for various cancer outcomes within the Million Women Study. He also co-leads proteomics as part of a large European initiative, DISCERN, that focuses on understanding the causes of pancreatic, renal, and colorectal cancer.

Dr Apostolos Tsiachristas

Apostolos Tsiachristas Headshot Cropped SquareDr Apostolos Tsiachristas is an Associate Professor at the Health Economics Research Centre (HERC), University of Oxford.

Apostolos is leading a programme of research that focuses mainly on the economic evaluation of new models of care and financial incentives in healthcare and has a particular interest in mental health and multi-morbidity. He also holds honorary research positions at the Office for Health Improvement and Disparities (UK GOV) and Oxford’s Department of Psychiatry and is an expert consultant for the World Health Organization on topics related to health financing.

Dr SanYuMay Tun

Sanyumay Tun Headshot Cropped SquareDr SanYuMay Tun is the Lead for Education for Sustainable Healthcare in the Medical Sciences Division, University of Oxford. She has a background in medicine as a former general practitioner, and also in environmental science and policy, and medical education.

SanYuMay has an international presence in bringing Planetary Health and sustainable healthcare into core health professions training. She also led the development of the first ESH curriculum to be endorsed by any national medical educational bodies – Education for Sustainable Healthcare – A curriculum for the UK.

Dr Emilie Vrain

Emilie Vrain Tightly Cropped Headshot OutsideDr Emilie Vrain is a Senior Researcher in the Energy group at the Environmental Change Institute, School of Geography and the Environment, University of Oxford.

She is a mixed methods social scientist and currently manages a Living Lab of households in Oxford, conducting research to investigate the underlying mechanisms of digital daily life and the impacts on climate change. Emilie also has over ten years of academic experience in the world of sustainable agriculture, farmer engagement and agri-environmental policy.

Dr Laurence Wainwright

Laurence Wainwright Profile Picture Cropped SquareDr Laurence Wainwright is a Departmental Lecturer in the School of Geography and the Environment and Course Director of the MSc in Sustainability, Enterprise and the Environment, University of Oxford.

Laurence’s research interests and teaching areas are multidisciplinary and diverse. They include sustainability and corporate social responsibility; mental health impacts of climate change; strategy, management, leadership; and precision psychiatry, psychopharmacology and drug repurposing. In addition to his primary role in the Smith School, Laurence is a Skoll Early Career Research Fellow in the Saïd Business School, and a Contributor Researcher and Facilitator in the Department of Psychiatry.

Dr Marta Wanat

Marta Wanat Profile Picture in blue top and pink jacketDr Marta Wanat is a Senior Behavioural Scientist in Qualitative Research in the Nuffield Department of Primary Care Health Sciences, University of Oxford.

Marta is a social scientist with a background in psychology, working at the interface between social science and medicine in primary care settings. Her research involves applying behavioural science to understand, develop and evaluate complex interventions with the aim of improving patient outcomes.
